South Highland Senior Adults don't take life sitting down — there's lots to do and our seniors aren't going to miss a beat! FELLOWSHIP AND ACTIVITIES The Highlanders, SHPC members over 65, meet at 10:30 a.m. each 3rd Tuesday for business and monthly updating. At 11:00 a.m. there is a program. A lunch for $4.00 is served at noon. Senior Sunday — Seniors are liturgists in both worship services on Senior Sunday in May. Octogenarian/Nonagenarian/Centenarian Sunday is the annual recognition of our members who have reached their 80th, 90th or 100th birthdays; this event is celebrated each year in May. Periodic seminars are offered on financial planning, medical/legal issues, etc. Cross-generational activities with young adults and with the church youth are enjoyed. 55-Alive, a defensive driving course, is offered when requested. A 10-week guided Autobiography Class meets when requested; this class offers seniors opportunities to record their own stories. A Senior Men's Prayer Breakfast meets Mondays at 6:30 a.m. Highlanders’ Day Out trips offer in town and out of town travels.
MEMBERSHIP CARE: The Card Ministry Table in the Gallery is available Wednesday through Sunday for messages of celebration, encouragement and sympathy. The Good Shepherd Group, an arm of the Senior Adult Ministries and the Board of Deacons, makes regular visits to hospitals, nursing homes and places of recuperation, sends notes of condolence to bereaved members and takes food and the sanctuary rose to new parents. Each December the GSG and the Senior Adult Ministries Board prepare Christmas gift bags for shut-ins. Memorial Books — When a Memorial Service is held at the church, Senior Adult Ministries provides a memorial book for the family. Communion is served to our homebound members.
COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION: Shepherd's Center — Although no longer meeting at South Highland, we keep our connection with Shepherd's Center, Southside. The Adventures in Learning series offers exercise, legal/medical seminars, classes, lunch and a program. Bus transportation is provided weekly to the grocery store for Southside residents. Volunteer Service — Many senior adults are active hospital auxillary volunteers.
LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: Governing Bodies — We participate in Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly workshops and conferences. SHPC seniors were instrumental in establishing the Presbytery-wide annual event "Great Day for Seniors," which is held each May. Interfaith Coalition — We are active in the Alabama Interfaith Coalition on Aging (AICA); SHPC is actively involved in a yearly AICA Spiritual Growth conference. Other Leadership Involvement — Seniors are provided leadership opportunities by serving on the Senior Adult Ministries (SAM) Advisory Board, by being on Highlanders’ Committees and by serving on the Presbytery’s Nurture Division.
SERVICES PROVIDED AND RECEIVED: Conference Scholarships are provided for senior adult conferences at Montreat. Helping Hands is an opportunity for SHPC members of all ages to assist seniors with minor home repairs, basic business affairs and transportation needs. Wednesday night meals are provided at a reduced price to Southside residents. Medical equipment is available for church or home use (i.e. wheelchairs, walkers, canes). Large print bulletins, hymnals, and devotional materials are provided. Hearing devices for use in the Fellowship Hall, Auditorium and Sanctuary are provided. Office Volunteers — 85% of the church office, Highlights, Wednesday night and finance office volunteers are senior adults. A list of sitters and companions is maintained and available for our members’ needs. The South Highland Center, a day activity program for seniors with memory disorders, operates Monday-Friday on the ground floor of the church.
